The Complete Cat Check-Up

A simple, monthly check that you can do at home can help you detect any early signs of poor health. Just follow our tips below. If you find anything unusual during one of these check-ups, contact your veterinarian.

1. Weigh your cat regularly.

Place your hands on the cat's ribs. You should be able to feel the ribs, but they shouldn't stick out. Check for fat pouches in the groin area, between the hind legs and under the belly.

2. Check your cat's coat.

Check for smoothness, then part the fur near the head and spine to check for flakes, scales or cuts. Check for fleas, too.

3. Check the eyes and ears.

Gently pull down the lower eyelid to check for pinkness. The whites of the eye should be glossy white. Also look for any color discharge. Check the ears for dirt, debris, or strong odors.

4. Look at the teeth.

Lift the lips from the gums; press a finger gently but firmly over an upper tooth. The gums should return to a pink color after you remove your finger. Inspect all the teeth.

5. Check for unusual lumps or bumps.

Place both hands on top of your cat's head, and move them down under the chin. Move your hands behind the cat's front legs, under the shoulders, down the back, over the hips and down the legs. Inspect your cat's claws and foot pad for cuts and cracks.
